Amazon launches Kindle reader for PCs

amazon Amazon launches Kindle reader for PCsAmazon has officially launched a “Kindle for PCs” app that will allow you more opportunities for reading your recently purchased e-books.

Taking the opposite path to the one chosen by Barnes and Noble, Amazon has finally released an e-reader that will allow you to read your e-books you purchased for the Kindle on your computer.

Barnes and Noble first released a PC reader and an app for the iPhone before releasing its Nook e-reader, but Amazon took the route of Kindle-iPhone app-PC reader for its e-book sales.  The B&N route seems to make a bit more sense as it opened up sales to anyone from day one, while Amazon first made you purchase a gadget to read the books.  With the ability for anyone to now be able to read the Kindle encoded books, Amazon could see a very marked increase in its e-book sales.

Like users of the Nook, Kindle owners will now be able to read a book on any device with a Kindle reader, and then seamlessly sync the last page read across all of the devices so they will always know where they are in the book.

Some of the highlighted features of the Kindle for PC includes:

  • Purchase, download and read hundreds of thousands of books available in the Kindle Store
  • Read the beginning of any book for free before they buy
  • Access their library of previously purchased Kindle books stored on Amazon’s servers for free
  • Read books in full color including children’s books, cookbooks, travel books, textbooks and graphic novels
  • Choose from more than 10 different font sizes and adjust words per line
  • Add and automatically synchronize bookmarks and last page read
  • View notes and highlights marked on Kindle, Kindle DX, iPhone, and iPod touch
  • Zoom in and out of text with a pinch of the fingers (Windows 7 users only)
  • Turn pages with a finger swipe (available in a future release for Windows 7 users)

This is a welcome addition to the Kindle family, and one that was sorely needed before the Nook launches at the end of this month.
