We knew it would happen – the Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor starrer Kurbaan was slapped with an ‘A’ rating by the Censor board, not just because of the gratuitous violence in it, but also for the scenes involving the leads repeatedly getting hot and heavy.
Confirming the news, a daily quoted a source as saying, ‘There is a lot of violence as the film is set against the backdrop of terrorism. Taking this into account, the censors felt that a ‘U’ or even a ‘U/A’ certificate would not be advisable.’ Talking about the film, Regional Officer of the Censor Board, Vinayak Azad said, “After we saw Kurbaan, we felt that it was meant for adult viewing only.”
Needless to say, director Rensil D’Silva and producer Karan Johar were not happy, considering Kurbaan will lose a massive chunk of its audience thanks to its ‘A’ rating. The film had already been embroiled in a controversy following the plagiarism issue with the makers of ‘New York’. In case you didn’t already know, there were a number of scenes in ‘New York’ which were originally to be featured in ‘Kurbaan’, including the one in ‘New york’ where John Abraham introduces Neil Nitin Mukesh to his terrorist cell.
The plot of ‘Kurbaan’ is also a lot like ‘New York’, the film opens in the USA (typical KJo), Kareena travels to her hometown Delhi to visit her ailing father, here she meets Saif Ali Khan, a Delhi University professor, the two fall in love, get married and settle in the US. It turns out that Saif is not professor but a mastermind terrorist who used her to protect his identity. Kareena gets to know that Saif Ali Khan and his men are planning to hijack and bomb an airplane carrying Vivek Oberoi, a high profile TV journalist. The rest of the film is about how Kareena with the help of Vivek tries to save the lives of passengers onboard.
What with the A certificate, Karan Johar will have a tough time making money out of the film. Kareena Kapoor defended the raunchy posters and promos of the film, saying that there is nothing vulgar about them. “This shot of me in a backless posture and Saif with a wound on his chest tell so much about the film`s theme,” Kareena told reporters. “There is love, passion and violence – all combined in here and what better way than to show it through a single still? You too would agree that there is nothing sleazy or vulgar about it. Knowing the sensibilities of Karan Johar (producer) and Rensil D`Silva (director), that`s the least one could have expected,” she added.
